Planning a trip to Bali and the Gili Islands can feel exciting, but also a little overwhelming. There are so many beautiful areas to choose from, each offering a completely different style of holiday.

Do you stay by the beach in Sanur? Book a luxury resort in Nusa Dua? Spend a few peaceful days in Ubud? Enjoy the restaurants and sunsets of Seminyak? Or add the Gili Islands for turtles, turquoise water, snorkelling and island-style relaxation?

The good news is that Bali and the Gili Islands work beautifully together when you plan your route properly. This guide will help you understand where to stay, how to move between each area, how to get to the Gili Islands, and how to build a relaxed, luxury-style itinerary that gives you the best of Bali without feeling rushed.

Before travelling, always check the latest Indonesian entry requirements. Australian travellers currently need a valid visa or e-VOA/VOA for tourism, and foreign tourists entering Bali must also pay the Bali tourist levy of IDR 150,000 per person, separate from the visa.

Why Combine Bali and the Gili Islands? 🌴🐟

Bali and the Gili Islands are very different, which is why they make such a beautiful travel combination.

Bali gives you luxury resorts, private pool villas, beach clubs, restaurants, shopping, temples, rice terraces, spa treatments and beautiful cultural experiences. The Gili Islands give you something slower: no cars, calm water, bicycles, beach cafés, snorkelling, turtles and that relaxed island feeling that is hard to find anywhere else.

A Bali and Gili Islands holiday is perfect if you want:

  • Luxury accommodation and private pool villas

  • Beach days and good restaurants

  • Snorkelling and swimming with turtles

  • A mix of relaxation, culture and adventure

  • Easy island hopping

  • A holiday that feels romantic, tropical and memorable

For first-time visitors, I usually recommend choosing two or three Bali areas, then adding three to five nights in the Gili Islands if you have enough time.

Before You Travel to Bali ✈️📚

Before flying to Bali, make sure your travel documents are organised. Many travellers can apply for an Indonesian e-Visa on Arrival before travelling, and this is usually the smoother option compared with arranging it after arrival. Australian Government travel advice also notes that Bali’s foreign tourist levy applies separately to your visa. Please make sure you use the official sites (which I have put the links below) as there are a lot of scam sites

It is also worth saving digital and printed copies of your accommodation bookings, fast boat tickets, driver details and travel insurance documents.

Arriving in Bali: What to Expect 🛬

Most international travellers arrive at Ngurah Rai International Airport, also known as Denpasar Airport. Although the airport is often called Denpasar, it is actually located close to Kuta, Tuban and Jimbaran, making the southern areas of Bali the easiest places to reach first.

Once you arrive, your first transfer will usually depend on where you are staying:

Kuta, Seminyak, Jimbaran and Nusa Dua are usually easiest after arrival because they are all in the southern part of Bali.

Sanur is also a good first stop because it is quieter than Kuta or Seminyak and works well if you are planning to take a boat to Nusa Penida or the Gili Islands later.

Ubud is inland and takes longer to reach, but it is a beautiful place to begin if you want a slower, cultural start to your holiday.

For an easier arrival, I recommend pre-booking a private driver rather than trying to organise transport after you land. It makes your first day much calmer, especially if you are arriving tired, late at night or with luggage. I have an amazing driver that I use all the time and have listed more information below.

How Many Nights Do You Need? 🛏️🌿

The ideal length depends on how much you want to see. For a relaxed Bali and Gili Islands holiday, I would suggest at least 10 to 14 nights. A good structure could look like this:

10-night trip:

Sanur or Seminyak – 2 nights

Ubud – 3 nights

Gili Islands – 3 nights

Nusa Dua or Sanur – 2 nights

14-night trip:

Seminyak – 3 nights

Ubud – 3 nights

Gili Islands – 4 nights

Nusa Dua – 3 nights

Sanur or Kuta – 1 night before flying home

Slow luxury trip:

Nusa Dua – 4 nights

Ubud – 3 nights

Gili Air or Gili Meno – 4 nights

Sanur – 3 nights

Try not to move every two nights unless you really enjoy packing and unpacking. Bali traffic can be slow, and transfers often take longer than expected which means you are wasting most of your precious time in a car.

Where to Stay in Bali 🌴

Each area of Bali offers a very different experience. Choosing the right base makes a huge difference to your holiday.

Nusa Dua: Best for Luxury Resorts and Relaxed Beach Holidays ⭐

Nusa Dua is one of Bali’s most polished resort areas. It is known for luxury beachfront hotels, manicured gardens, calm resort-style beaches and a more peaceful atmosphere than Kuta or Seminyak.

This is a great area if you want an easy, high-end holiday where everything is close by and you can truly relax. Many resorts in Nusa Dua have large pools, beachfront dining, day spas and beautiful gardens, making it ideal for couples, honeymooners and travellers who want comfort.

Nusa Dua is best for:

  • Luxury resorts

  • Beachfront stays

  • Honeymoons and romantic holidays

  • Relaxed resort-style travel

  • Families wanting calm, easy facilities

  • A final relaxing stop before flying home

Nusa Dua is less suitable if you want nightlife, boutique shopping or a busy restaurant scene outside your resort. It is more of a “stay, swim, dine and relax” destination.

Ubud: Best for Culture, Rice Fields, Wellness and Private Pool Villas 🌿

Ubud is the cultural heart of Bali and feels completely different from the beach areas. Instead of ocean views, you will find jungle valleys, rice fields, temples, yoga studios, day spas, markets and beautiful private pool villas.

Ubud is perfect if you want a slower and more soulful side of Bali. It is a beautiful place to stay for a few nights between beach destinations.

Ubud is best for:

  • Private pool villas

  • Rice field and jungle views

  • Spa treatments and wellness

  • Temples and cultural experiences

  • Romantic stays

  • Cafés, restaurants and markets

Many people make the mistake of visiting Ubud only as a day trip, but staying overnight gives you a completely different experience. Early mornings and evenings in Ubud are often the most beautiful times.

Seminyak: Best for Restaurants, Shopping, Beach Clubs and Stylish Villas 🌿

Seminyak is one of Bali’s most popular areas for travellers who want a mix of beach, dining, shopping and nightlife without being as chaotic as Kuta.

It has stylish villas, boutique hotels, sunset beach bars, beach clubs, spas and some of Bali’s best restaurants. Seminyak is a great choice if you want a more social and polished Bali experience.

Seminyak is best for:

  • Restaurants and cocktails

  • Shopping and boutiques

  • Private pool villas

  • Beach clubs

  • Sunset drinks

  • Couples and friends

Seminyak can be busy, and traffic can be frustrating, but it is still one of the best places to stay if you want convenience, atmosphere and plenty of dining choices.

Sanur: Best for a Quieter Beach Stay and Easy Boat Transfers 🌴

Sanur is one of my favourite areas for a calmer Bali stay. It has a long beachfront path, relaxed restaurants, gentle beach clubs, sunrise views and a more mature, easygoing feel than Seminyak or Kuta.

Sanur is also a very practical base if you are taking boats to nearby islands. Many travellers use Sanur before or after visiting Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan or sometimes as part of their route toward the Gili Islands.

Sanur is best for:

  • Relaxed beach stays

  • Sunrise walks

  • Couples and mature travellers

  • Good restaurants without too much chaos

  • Pre-boat or post-boat stays

  • Easy final nights before flying home

Sanur is not as glamorous as Seminyak or as resort-focused as Nusa Dua, but it is calm, convenient and very easy to enjoy.

Kuta: Best for Convenience, Budget Stays and Short Stopovers 🌴

Kuta is one of Bali’s busiest and most well-known areas. It is close to the airport, has plenty of shops, restaurants and budget accommodation, and can be useful for a short first or final night.

For luxury travellers, Kuta may not be the main destination, but it can still work if you want convenience, a quick stopover, or easy access to the airport.

Kuta is best for:

  • Airport convenience

  • Short stopovers

  • Shopping

  • Budget-friendly stays

  • First or last night in Bali

If you are planning a more peaceful or luxury-style holiday, I would usually choose Sanur, Seminyak or Nusa Dua over Kuta for a longer stay.

How to Get Around Bali 🚗🛵🚤

Getting around Bali is one of the most important parts of planning your trip. Distances may look short on a map, but traffic can make travel times much longer.

The easiest and most comfortable option is usually a private driver. You can book a driver for airport transfers, day trips, shopping days, sightseeing or longer transfers between areas.

Private drivers are especially useful for:

  • Airport pick-ups

  • Ubud day trips

  • Moving between hotels

  • Travelling with luggage

  • Visiting temples, waterfalls and rice terraces

  • Getting to fast boat ports

You can also use ride apps in many parts of Bali, but they are not always allowed to pick up from every hotel, beach club or tourist area. For longer transfers, a trusted private driver is usually easier.

There is the only driver I use when in Bali - He is reliable, very knowledgeable of all areas of Bali, safe and will go out of his way to make your travel comfortable

Suggested Bali Transfer Flow 🌴

Here is a practical way to think about your Bali route:

Airport to Seminyak/Kuta/Jimbaran:  Easiest for arrival

Airport to Sanur:  Good for a calm start or island transfer

Airport to Nusa Dua:  Best for resort relaxation

South Bali to Ubud:  Good middle section of the trip

Ubud to Padang Bai:  Common route for Gili fast boats

Gili Islands back to Bali:  Return to Sanur, Seminyak, Kuta or Nusa Dua depending on your final plans

If you are going to the Gili Islands, try to avoid flying home on the same day you return by fast boat. Sea conditions, delays or schedule changes can happen. It is much safer to spend your final night back in Bali.

Adding the Gili Islands to Your Bali Trip🏝️

The Gili Islands are located off the northwest coast of Lombok and are commonly reached by fast boat from Bali. The three main islands are:

  • Gili Trawangan

  • Gili Air

  • Gili Meno

Each island has its own personality, so choosing the right one matters.

Fast boats commonly depart from Bali ports such as Padang Bai, Sanur and Serangan. Padang Bai is often used because it has one of the shorter sea crossings to the Gili Islands, commonly around 1.5 to 2 hours depending on conditions - this is the options I usually take on the early morning Ekajaya Fast Boat 🚤

Gili Trawangan: Best for Energy, Restaurants and Snorkelling Trips 🍕🤿

Gili Trawangan, often called Gili T, is the largest and busiest of the three Gili Islands. It has the most restaurants, beach bars, accommodation choices and tour options.

Gili T is best for:

  • First-time Gili visitors

  • Snorkelling tours

  • Restaurants and beach bars

  • Sunset spots

  • A more social island feel

  • Easy access to boats and activities

Although Gili T has a party reputation, it also has peaceful areas, especially if you stay away from the main harbour strip. It can still work beautifully for couples if you choose the right villa or quieter side of the island.

Internal link idea:

Gili Air: Best for a Balanced Island Stay 🌴🐢

Gili Air is a beautiful middle ground between Gili Trawangan and Gili Meno. It is quieter than Gili T but has more restaurants and atmosphere than Gili Meno.

This is a wonderful choice if you want the island feeling without being too remote.

Gili Air is best for:

  • Couples

  • Relaxed restaurants

  • Private pool villas

  • Swimming and snorkelling

  • A slower island pace

  • Travellers who want peaceful but not too quiet

Gili Air is one of the best choices if you want to stay longer in the Gili Islands.

Gili Meno: Best for Romance, Honeymoons and Quiet Escapes 🏝️🤿

Gili Meno is the quietest and most romantic of the three Gili Islands. It is ideal if you want fewer crowds, beautiful beaches and a peaceful escape.

This is the island for slow mornings, beach walks, snorkelling, reading, swimming and romantic dinners.

Gili Meno is best for:

  • Honeymoons

  • Romantic escapes

  • Quiet beach stays

  • Snorkelling

  • Slower travel

  • Couples who want peace and privacy

Gili Meno has fewer restaurants and accommodation choices than Gili T or Gili Air, so it is best for travellers who are happy with a quieter experience.

Which Gili Island Should You Choose? 🏝️

Choosing the right Gili Island depends on your travel style.

Choose Gili Trawangan if you want more restaurants, activities, snorkelling tours and a lively atmosphere.

Choose Gili Air if you want a beautiful balance of calm, restaurants, swimming and island charm.

Choose Gili Meno if you want romance, quiet beaches and a peaceful honeymoon-style escape.

For many travellers, the best option is to stay on one island and take a boat trip to visit the others. This gives you the experience of all three islands without needing to pack and move accommodation every couple of days.

Bali to Gili Islands Transfers 🛥️

Getting from Bali to the Gili Islands usually involves two parts:

  1. A car transfer from your Bali accommodation to the fast boat harbour

  2. A fast boat from Bali to the Gili Islands

Your best departure port will depend on where you are staying in Bali.

TIP: 👉 We only every leave from Padang Bai as it is the closest port to the islands and the trip only takes one and half hours - go early as well to get calmer waters 👍

We only every use Ekajaya Fast Ferry

Ekajaya Fast Ferry
Ekajaya Fast Ferry

From Ubud:

Padang Bai is often one of the most practical departure points.

From Seminyak, Kuta or Canggu:

Serangan or Padang Bai may be used, depending on the boat operator.

From Sanur:

Some services depart from Sanur, though routes and schedules vary.

From Nusa Dua:

Some services depart from Sanur, though routes and schedules vary.

You will usually need a car transfer to the relevant harbour first.

Fast boat journeys vary depending on the port, operator, weather and sea conditions. Some fast boat services advertise crossings from around 90 minutes, while other routes may take longer depending on stops and conditions.

For comfort, I recommend:

  • Booking a reputable fast boat operator

  • Checking luggage rules

  • Avoiding same-day international flights after returning from Gili

  • Taking seasickness tablets if you are prone to motion sickness

  • Keeping valuables and electronics in a waterproof bag

  • Wearing comfortable clothes and shoes suitable for boarding boats

If staying on Gili Meno, check whether your fast boat stops there directly. Some services may require you to arrive via Gili Trawangan and then take a local boat across to Gili Meno.

Private pool villa, restaurants, spa treatments and sunset drinks.

Ubud – 3 nights

Jungle villa, floating breakfast, rice fields and romantic dinners.

Gili Meno or Gili Air – 4 nights

Snorkelling, beach walks, turtles and slow island days.

Nusa Dua – 3 nights

Best Time to Visit Bali and the Gili Islands ☀️🌴

Bali and the Gili Islands are popular year-round, but the experience changes depending on the season.

The dry season (April to October) is generally the most popular time to visit because it usually brings better beach weather and calmer conditions. The wet season (November to March) can still be beautiful, but you may experience heavier rain, humidity and more unpredictable sea conditions.

For the Gili Islands, sea conditions matter because your transfer depends on fast boats. If you are travelling during rougher weather periods, allow extra flexibility and avoid tight flight connections.

What to Pack for Bali and the

Gili Islands 👗👙🤿

Packing well makes the trip much easier, especially if you are moving between Bali and the Gili Islands.

Useful items include:

  • Lightweight dresses and resort wear

  • Swimwear

  • Reef-safe sunscreen

  • Hat and sunglasses

  • Comfortable sandals

  • Reef shoes for coral beaches

  • Snorkel mask if you prefer your own

  • Waterproof phone pouch

  • GoPro or equivalent

  • Dry bag for boat transfers

  • Light shawl or sarong for temples (plus gets cold on the plane and boat)

  • Insect repellent - can get over there, Soffel is a great brand

  • Travel adaptor

  • Basic medication and seasickness tablets

For the Gili Islands, pack lighter if possible. Paths can be sandy and uneven, and there are no cars, so smaller luggage is much easier.

Food, Restaurants and Dining

One of the best parts of visiting Bali and the Gili Islands is the food - it is amazing. Bali has everything from beachfront seafood and local warungs to fine dining, smoothie bowls, rooftop cocktails and romantic restaurants.

Seminyak is one of the best areas for restaurants and nightlife. Ubud is excellent for cafés, healthy food and romantic jungle dining. Sanur has relaxed beachfront restaurants, while Nusa Dua is more resort-focused.

The Gili Islands have a more relaxed dining scene, with beach cafés, seafood restaurants, sunset bars and casual island-style meals.

Snorkelling in the Gili Islands 🤿🐠

If snorkelling is a priority, the Gili Islands are one of the best additions to a Bali trip. The water is often clear and beautiful, and the islands are well known for turtle sightings.

Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air all offer snorkelling, but organised boat trips are one of the easiest ways to see multiple spots. Popular experiences include turtle points, coral gardens and underwater statues around Gili Meno.

It is very important to snorkel responsibly. Never touch turtles, stand on coral or crowd marine life. Keep a respectful distance and choose operators who care about the reef and the animals.

Should You Book Accommodation Before You Go? 🏝️

For Bali and the Gili Islands, I recommend booking your main accommodation before you travel, especially if you are visiting during peak periods or want private pool villas.

The best villas and boutique stays often book out early, especially in popular areas like Seminyak, Ubud, Gili Air and Gili Trawangan.

Book ahead if you want:

  • Private pool villas

  • Beachfront resorts

  • Honeymoon stays

  • Gili Island villas

  • Luxury resorts in Nusa Dua

  • Accommodation with strong reviews and good locations

You can still leave some flexibility, but for a smooth luxury trip, it is better to lock in your key stays.

My Best Bali and Gili Islands Planning

Tips 🤩

Here are my biggest tips for planning a smoother trip:

Do not try to see everything in one trip. Bali looks small, but traffic and transfers take time.

Choose areas that match your travel style. Nusa Dua, Ubud, Seminyak and Sanur are all very different.

Add the Gili Islands only if you have enough nights. A rushed one-night visit is not worth the transfer time.

Avoid returning from the Gili Islands on the same day as your international flight.

Use private drivers for comfort and ease.

Stay at least three nights in Ubud if you want to properly enjoy it.

Choose Gili Air or Gili Meno if you want a quieter island experience.

Choose Gili Trawangan if you want more restaurants, activities and boat options.

Book your fast boat in advance during busy periods.

Keep some days slow. Bali and the Gili Islands are best enjoyed when you are not rushing.

Final Thoughts: Is Bali and the Gili Islands Worth It? 🌴

Yes — Bali and the Gili Islands are absolutely worth combining if you want a holiday with variety, beauty and memorable experiences.

Bali gives you luxury villas, beach resorts, restaurants, shopping, culture and spa experiences. The Gili Islands give you turtles, clear water, island charm and a slower pace that feels like a true escape.

The key is choosing the right areas and planning your transfers properly. For a balanced trip, I would combine one beach area, Ubud, one Gili Island and a final relaxing stop back in Bali.

Whether you are planning a romantic escape, a luxury villa holiday, a snorkelling trip or your first Bali adventure, this route gives you the best of both worlds.

Happy Travels 🤩
